The Zoanthid corals (Zoanthus sp.) are a vibrant, mat-forming soft coral prized for its small, flower-like polyps and wide range of colour morphs. Each polyp typically measures 5 to 10 mm in diameter, forming dense carpets across rock surfaces that add texture, movement, and colour variation to the reefscape. Well suited to the Living Ecosystem Aquarium, Zoanthids are hardy, adaptable, and ideal for creating lush, living groundcover in complex reef structures.
Available in hues from vivid green and orange to rare multicolour varieties, Zoanthids grow in colonies that can thrive in low-light or shaded areas, making them perfect for filling crevices or covering the base of Living Blocks and reef walls.
With low to moderate lighting and gentle to moderate water flow, Zoanthids require little maintenance. They tolerate a broad range of water conditions and respond to light and nutrients by slowly expanding across surfaces. The small polyps open and close with water movement, creating soft pulsing motion that adds life to the aquarium.
Reproduction
Zoanthids propagate asexually through budding along the mat, with new polyps forming at the edges of the colony and gradually spreading. Their fast growth and ease of fragmentation make them ideal for propagation and aquascaping. With consistent care, Zoanthids form colourful carpets that enhance biodiversity, encourage beneficial microfauna, and create an immersive reef experience.
