The Dottyback (Pseudochromis fridmani) is a striking reef fish admired for its vibrant fuchsia-orchid purple coloration and slender, streamlined body. Aquacultured and supplied as juveniles, these fish are sustainably sourced and well-adapted to aquarium life. Their bold and curious personality adds life and movement to the Living Ecosystems Aquarium, where they often dart through rock crevices and shaded overhangs.
Social Behaviour
Dottybacks are independent and inquisitive, often exploring every part of the aquarium. While they do not form groups, they are surprisingly engaging with people, quickly learning to recognise their keeper and often coming to the glass during feeding or activity around the tank. This makes them a lively and interactive addition for families who enjoy fish with visible character and curiosity.
Habitat & Adaptability
In nature, dottybacks live among reef crevices and ledges. In aquariums, the Living Blocks Reef provides similar hiding spots and secure spaces, allowing them to establish a territory while still feeling comfortable to roam.
Breeding
Dottybacks are egg-layers. When spawning occurs, eggs are laid in a crevice and guarded by the male until hatching. Successful breeding in a community reef tank is rare and often requires separate conditions to protect the fry.
Aggression & Stocking
Due to their territorial nature, only one dottyback should be housed per tank. They are not aggressive toward clownfish or other peaceful species but may show hostility toward other dottybacks. Following stocking guidelines ensures a harmonious aquarium.
All fish are covered by our 14-day Livestock Warranty, which provides a replacement or store credit if livestock is lost or in poor condition within this period.
