Clean Up Crew - Peppermint Shrimp

Transcript

Peppermint shrimp are one of the most underrated members of your clean-up crew and can play an important role in keeping your aquarium balanced.

They help by feeding on:

  • algae
  • bacteria
  • nuisance species like aptasia

That makes them a really useful addition to the overall health of the tank.

We generally recommend introducing:

  • two to four peppermint shrimp per aquarium
  • keeping them in small groups where possible

They tend to do better together and naturally like to live in groups.

Don’t be surprised if you don’t always see them.

Peppermint shrimp can be quite secretive and often spend time hiding during the day.

You’ll usually notice more activity at night when the aquarium becomes quieter.

There are a couple of things to keep in mind though.

Some species, like dottybacks, may occasionally become aggressive toward peppermint shrimp, so keep an eye on interactions if both are sharing the same tank.

Overall, peppermint shrimp are a great addition to your clean-up crew and fit well into a more sustainable aquaculture approach to marine aquariums.
