St James' Anglican School
We're back at St James' Anglican School, where one of our Living Ecosystem Aquariums has been part of the Marine Science program for the past six months.
The aquarium has become a popular feature in the classroom, giving students the opportunity to observe a living marine ecosystem every day while requiring very little maintenance.
During this visit, Ben caught up with Becky, who leads the Marine Science program, to discuss an exciting new research project.
Working alongside the students, the team will investigate different methods of controlling nuisance algae within a marine ecosystem.
The project will involve:
- introducing several common nuisance algae species
- observing how hermit crabs respond to each algae type
- trialing the Living Oceans Revive and Thrive program
- monitoring ecosystem changes over a two to three month period
The research will form part of the school's Year 11 and 12 Marine Science studies, giving students a hands-on opportunity to apply scientific investigation methods in a real ecosystem.
We'll be following the results as the project progresses.
