Stressed Coral: What To Do

Transcript

Corals don’t always look perfect every day and sometimes recovery is part of healthy growth.

In this 130 model aquarium, this leather coral had become fully retracted. Looking closer, Ben found a layer of algae and sand sitting across the surface. Nearby clownfish had been stirring the sand while making a nest and constantly disturbing the coral.

The first step was simple, gently clean off the buildup.

But leather corals have another trick.Over the next few days, this coral will likely shed a waxy layer to remove algae and debris naturally. Think of it like shedding skin. Once that process finishes, the coral will often return larger and healthier.

If you notice coral behaving like this:

  • observe before reacting
  • clean gently if needed
  • consider relocating it
  • allow time for recovery

Sometimes the best thing you can do is let nature do its thing.

Thanks for watching.
