The Orange Discosoma Corallimorph (Discosoma sp.) is a vibrant, soft-bodied coral relative found in Indo-Pacific reef systems, including Australian waters. It naturally populates shaded ledges, rubble zones, and reef crevices, where it gradually spreads across hard surfaces.
These corals are known for their bright blood orange colour, with tones ranging from tangerine to reddish-orange. Under reef lighting, especially in the soft light of mid-morning as the sky shifts toward orange, they fluoresce similarly to red morph corals β creating a warm, glowing effect that adds striking contrast to the reef display.
Each polyp typically measures 20β50 mm in diameter, forming a gently domed disc with softly rippling edges and faint radial striations. Its colouration ranges from bright orange and tangerine to reddish-orange, often showing iridescent or fluorescent highlights under actinic or blue reef lighting. The richness of its orange tones makes it a striking contrast species within the reef display.
The Orange Discosoma thrives in low to moderate light and prefers gentle water flow, making it best suited for lower tank zones, shaded rock areas, or the base of reef structures. It contributes to reef aesthetics by gradually encrusting surfaces and creating visually soft, colourful patches across the aquascape.
Morphs and Biology
Discosoma spp. belong to the Corallimorpharia order, a group of soft-bodied, anemone-like invertebrates related to corals but without a stony skeleton. They are hardy, adaptable, and available in various colour morphs, making them popular among reef hobbyists.
Reproduction
Orange Discosoma reproduce asexually through fission (splitting) or pedal laceration, where small tissue fragments at the base develop into new polyps. Colonies can stay static for months, then enter a rapid expansion phase, creating lush carpets of soft polyps that add dynamic movement and texture to the reef environment.
Summary
The Orange Discosoma is prized not only for its vivid colour but also for its resilience and low care requirements, making it an excellent species for sustainable, low-maintenance marine aquarium systems.
