Invertebrates such as snails and hermit crabs and shrimp are essential members of a healthy reef aquarium. Sustainably sourced and naturally hardy, they bring balance to the Living Ecosystems Aquarium by grazing on algae, consuming detritus, and stirring the sand bed. Their constant foraging and cleaning behaviour help maintain water quality, prevent waste build-up, and reduce the need for manual maintenance.
Behaviour and Compatibility
These invertebrates are peaceful and reef-safe, making them ideal companions for clownfish, dottybacks, cardinalfish, and other community
species. Each type contributes in a slightly different way. Snails graze algae from rock and glass, hermit crabs scavenge and add movement across the reef, and shrimp actively clean the system by consuming detritus and assisting with pest control, including Aiptasia. Together, they form a natural clean-up crew that supports the long-term stability of the reef ecosystem.
Habitat & Adaptability
In the wild, snails and hermit crabs and shrimp are found across reef flats, rubble zones, and sandy shallows. In aquariums, they adapt readily to the Living Blocks Reef and Living Sand areas, where they find shelter, food, and surfaces to graze. Providing a mixture of rockwork, sandy zones, and spare shells (for hermit crabs) ensures they can thrive and continue their important ecological roles.
Feeding
Most invertebrates meet their nutritional needs by feeding on algae, detritus, and uneaten food within the aquarium. Shrimp will also scavenge for small meaty particles. In systems with low natural growth, supplemental feeding with algae wafers, marine pellets, or small meaty foods can be offered to maintain health and activity.
Reproduction
While some snails may reproduce in well-established aquariums, successful captive breeding of many invertebrates, including hermit
crabs and shrimp, is uncommon due to complex larval stages. In most aquariums, populations are maintained through careful sourcing and the natural longevity of these species.
