Do's and Don'ts Before Going on Holidays

Transcript

One of the most common questions we get is, what should you do if you’re going away?

If you’re only going away for about a week, generally it’s not too difficult to manage.

Before you leave, make sure:

  • your food is topped up
  • your auto top off reservoir is filled
  • everything is running normally

For shorter trips, that’s often enough to keep the system stable.

If you’re planning to be away for longer, there are a couple of extra things to consider.

You might want to set up a webcam so you can visually check in on the aquarium while you’re away, or arrange for someone to come around every few days just to make sure everything looks normal.

We’ve even had situations where pumps have stopped running for a few days and the aquarium remained stable.

That said, you don’t want to take unnecessary risks, especially during hotter periods where temperatures in the house could rise.

The biggest recommendation before going away is to avoid making major changes.

Don’t do a large water change right before leaving.

Don’t add bacteria or make significant adjustments to the system.

Instead, keep everything exactly as it has been.

The goal is to maintain a steady state and let the aquarium continue doing what it does naturally.

A stable system is usually a successful system.
