How to Clean the Sand with Scraper

Transcript

The scraper is one of the most versatile tools in the Living Oceans aquarium.

It doesn’t just clean glass, it also helps maintain the sand bed.

In the early weeks of setup, we recommend turning over the sand once or twice each week.

To do this:

  • remove the lid
  • hang the light safely
  • keep the scraper blade covered

Using the back of the scraper, gently work through the sand.

You can push slightly below the surface and even clean along the front glass where buildup can develop.

It only takes a couple of minutes.

Turning the sand helps:

  • mix nutrients back into the system
  • reduce visible buildup
  • support sand-dwelling organisms

If algae appears in the sand, the critters living there will often help process it naturally.

If sand turning becomes an everyday task, it may be time to consider additional nutrient management strategies.

Keep it simple and let the ecosystem do the work.
