How to Turn Over the Sand in Your Aquarium

Turning over the sand is a simple maintenance task that helps keep your Living Oceans aquarium healthy, especially during the first few weeks while the ecosystem is establishing.

It only takes a minute or two and can help prevent algae from building up on the sand bed.

When Should You Turn the Sand?

We recommend turning the sand:

  • once or twice a week while a new aquarium is establishing
  • after a nutrient spike, when excess algae has appeared on the sand

Once the aquarium has matured and stabilised, you'll only need to do this occasionally.

How to Turn the Sand

Before you begin, remove the aquarium lid and hang the light safely on the auto feeder.

Using the back of the scraper with the blade cover still attached, gently stir the top layer of sand around the aquarium.

As you work:

  • keep the blade cover on to protect the scraper
  • gently turn the surface of the sand rather than digging deeply
  • stir along the front glass where debris can collect
  • move a little sand beneath the reef structure if needed
  • reshape the sand bed to your preferred look

This process helps mix algae and organic matter back into the sand, where beneficial organisms can naturally break it down.

The sand bed is home to countless beneficial organisms that form part of your aquarium's ecosystem.

Turning the sand allows these organisms to process algae and organic waste more efficiently, helping maintain a cleaner and healthier aquarium.

What If You're Doing It Every Day?

If you find yourself needing to stir the sand every day because algae keeps returning, it's usually a sign of excess nutrients rather than a sand problem.

Instead of increasing maintenance, we recommend:

  • performing a 48-hour blackout to control fast-growing algae
  • considering one of our bacterial support programs if algae continues to return

Addressing the cause of the algae will be more effective than repeatedly stirring the sand.
