How Does Filtration Work in a Living Oceans Aquarium?
One of the most common questions we receive is: What filtration does a Living Oceans Aquarium use?
Unlike many traditional marine aquariums, there are no protein skimmers or chillers. Instead, the system relies on natural biological processes that work together to create a balanced marine ecosystem.
Natural Filtration by Design
The foundation of the system is the Lagoon Algae Refuge, which contains fast-growing macroalgae such as Chaetomorpha. As it grows, it absorbs excess nutrients from the water while also providing a safe habitat for copepods and other beneficial microfauna.
Behind the aquarium, live bio-media and live sand support colonies of beneficial bacteria that break down fish waste and help maintain water quality. Both are aquacultured before being introduced into the aquarium, helping establish biological filtration from day one.
Simple, Effective Support
The filtration chamber also contains activated carbon and phosphate remover (GFO), which help maintain water clarity and nutrient balance. Beneficial bacteria can be added periodically to support the ecosystem and help rebalance the aquarium when needed.
Rather than chasing ultra-low nutrient levels, Living Oceans Aquariums are designed around hardy soft corals that thrive in stable environments. This allows the system to operate with less equipment and less intervention while still supporting a healthy reef.
