Cleaning the Sand

Transcript

One of the maintenance tasks we recommend doing regularly is turning over the sand and giving the aquarium a quick tidy up.

To do this, grab your scraper or a net and gently work through the surface of the sand.

One important tip is to protect the blade on your scraper.

If the blade gets chipped, it can leave streaks every time you clean the glass, which becomes frustrating over time.

We recommend putting the cover back onto the scraper before using it in the sand.

You also want to be careful not to scratch the aquarium glass.

A good technique is to bury the scraper into the sand away from the glass first, then gently bring it across the surface.

As you do this, you’ll notice areas of the sand can start to look green over time.

That’s normal and part of the natural buildup that happens in the system.

If needed, you can lightly get in there with the scour tool to help clean and loosen anything that’s settled.

For sand maintenance:

  • turn over the sand surface
  • protect the scraper blade
  • avoid scratching the glass
  • tidy up any visible buildup

This is the type of maintenance we recommend doing around once a month.

Combined with regular glass cleaning, it helps keep the aquarium looking clean while maintaining a healthy system.
