How Much Maintenance Does a Living Oceans Aquarium Really Need?

One of the biggest misconceptions about marine aquariums is that they're difficult and time-consuming to maintain. Traditional reef tanks often require frequent equipment cleaning, water testing, and complex filtration systems.

The Living Oceans Aquarium was designed differently. By relying on a balanced ecosystem instead of complicated technology, routine maintenance is simple, predictable, and only takes a few minutes each week.

A Simple Maintenance Routine

Rather than spending hours maintaining your aquarium, you'll follow a straightforward schedule that keeps the ecosystem healthy while allowing you to enjoy watching it grow.

Daily (1 minute)

A quick daily check is all that's needed to make sure everything is running as expected.

Take a moment to:

  • Check your fish and corals are behaving normally.
  • Confirm the equipment is operating correctly.
  • Enjoy your reef.

These brief observations often help you notice small changes before they become bigger issues.

Weekly (4 minutes)

Twice each week, use the included Magnet Cleaner to remove soft algae from the glass. At the same time, gently stir sections of the sand bed to keep the substrate looking clean and healthy.

This simple routine maintains clear viewing panels while helping prevent detritus from building up.

Monthly (10 minutes)

Over time, a thin layer of harder algae may begin forming on the glass. This is perfectly normal and can be removed using the Glass Scraper included in your Maintenance Kit.

Monthly maintenance also includes:

  • Refilling the Auto Feeder.
  • Topping up the Auto Top Off (ATO) reservoir with fresh tap water.
  • Inspecting the aquarium and equipment.

When the freshwater reservoir is filled to around 17 litres, it typically provides four to six weeks of automatic top-up water before needing to be refilled.

Every Three Months (30 minutes)

Every few months, perform a simple preventative water change using the included Maintenance Kit.

This routine refreshes water quality while helping maintain the long-term stability of your Living Oceans Aquarium. Because the aquarium relies on established biological filtration rather than complex mechanical systems, there's no need for constant filter cleaning or servicing.

Everything You Need Is Included

Routine maintenance has been designed to be as straightforward as possible.

Your Living Oceans Aquarium includes the essential tools you'll need, neatly stored within the cabinet drawer, including the Magnet Cleaner, Glass Scraper, and Maintenance Kit. Having everything organised in one place makes regular care quick and convenient.

Combined with the automated Auto Feeder and Auto Top Off (ATO), much of the day-to-day work is already taken care of.

Extra Support When You Need It

If you'd rather leave the maintenance to the experts, we also offer a Maintenance Service Site Visit (Perth Metro).

Our experienced team can perform scheduled maintenance, inspect the health of your aquarium, and ensure your reef continues to thrive. It's an excellent option for busy owners or anyone wanting extra peace of mind.

For ongoing guidance, every Living Oceans Aquarium also includes access to our Support Hub, where you'll find short, step-by-step training videos covering everything from routine maintenance to livestock care and troubleshooting.
