In-The-Tank: Edward, The Hermit Crab
Transcript
Welcome to In The Tank, where a Living Oceans aquarium is set up in 90 minutes, then nature takes over.
Today, meet Edward. Edward is a hermit crab and part of the clean-up crew that helps maintain the reef.
Unlike other reef animals, hermit crabs don’t grow their own shells. As they grow, they move into larger shells and continue exploring the ecosystem. Over time, as the aquarium matures, natural growth starts to appear.
That includes:
- algae on the rocks
- algae across the sand
- organic matter settling through the reef
Edward helps manage that naturally.
Throughout the day, hermit crabs:
- graze surfaces
- clean leftover material
- move across the reef
They may be small, but they help keep the ecosystem in balance. It all starts with a simple setup.
Then nature takes over.
Meet the rest of the reef in the next episode of In The Tank.
