Today, meet Morty. Morty is a zombie snail and one of the reef's hidden clean-up crew members.
Most of the time, zombie snails remain buried beneath the sand, helping support the ecosystem from below the surface.
Using a siphon that extends above the sand, they can:
- detect food
- sense their surroundings
- stay connected to activity in the reef
When food settles onto the sand bed, Morty gets to work.
Zombie snails help recycle leftover food and organic waste before it can affect water quality.
While they are rarely seen, they play an important role in keeping the reef clean and balanced.
It all starts with a simple setup.
Then nature takes over.
