Circulation Return Pump Removal | Install Settings
The return pump is responsible for circulating water through your Living Oceans Aquarium, delivering water to the filtration system and heater before returning it back to the display. If you're replacing the pump or carrying out maintenance, installing it correctly is essential for maintaining healthy water movement and reliable operation.

Before You Begin
Before removing or replacing the return pump, always switch off the power to the aquarium.
To access the pump chamber:
- Remove the light.
- Remove the automatic feeder.
- Remove the pump chamber lid.
- Disconnect the return nozzle.
- Carefully lift the pump out of the pump chamber.
The pump will contain a small amount of water, so keep a towel nearby to catch any drips.
Preparing the New Pump
Transfer the return hose from the old pump to the new one before installing it.
If you're also moving the impeller, remove the rear screen and pump cover to access it.
Reinstalling the Impeller
The impeller must be installed correctly for the pump to operate smoothly.
Align the locating groove on the impeller with the locating guide beneath the power cable, then push the impeller fully into the housing until it sits flush. Once correctly positioned, the pump cover should fit neatly without forcing it into place.

Installing the Return Pump
Once the pump has been assembled:
- Place the pump fully into the pump chamber.
- Feed the 90-degree elbow through the opening in the back of the aquarium.
- Reattach the return nozzle.
- Route the pump cable through to the cabinet.
Connecting the Pump Controller
Connect the pump cable to the controller by aligning the male and female connectors.
Push the connectors firmly together, then tighten the locking cap to secure the connection.
Restore power to the aquarium once everything is connected.
Recommended Pump Settings
After the pump starts, confirm the controller is using the recommended Living Oceans settings:
- Power: F100 (100%)
- Mode: M2 (Pulsing Mode)
These settings provide the ideal flow rate for your aquarium and help maintain healthy water circulation throughout the system.
Adjusting the Return Nozzle
Position the return nozzle so it sits horizontally, creating a gentle ripple across the water surface.
Avoid pointing the nozzle upwards. Excessive surface agitation can increase noise, create salt creep around the aquarium and reduce the clean appearance of your setup.
Routine Maintenance
The return pump requires very little maintenance, but regular checks will help keep it operating efficiently.
We recommend:
- Checking that water is flowing normally from the return nozzle.
- Confirming the controller remains set to F100 and M2.
- Cleaning the pump and impeller whenever sand or debris begins to affect performance.
- Inspecting the return nozzle to ensure it remains correctly positioned.
